Plot

In the turbulent aftermath of the 1965 Watts riots, Richard Kelly, a young black college graduate, finds himself navigating the narrow corridors of an all-white seminary. Bearing the weight of probation, Richard is caught in the seminary's paradoxical web that yearns for black followers yet shuns black leadership. The seminary's president, Alan Beckett, encourages Richard to challenge the status quo and shatter the color line. In contrast, the aloof Professor Kate Allison, burdened by her past as a missionary, views Richard's presence with skeptical eyes. Richard's journey becomes increasingly arduous as he grapples with the pervasive racism and the ghosts of his personal life. Just when he teeters on the brink of despair, he crosses paths with Samuel, a wise, elderly ex-alcoholic who dwells within the shadows of the dormitory's basement. As a guiding beacon in the storm of Richard's trials, Samuel aids him in weathering the onslaught of prejudice and personal demons. This transformative bond forces Richard to confront a crossroads that straddles his dreams and his destiny. Inspired by a true story, "The Least Among You" is a testament to resilience, the power of mentorship, and the courage it takes to defy societal norms in the pursuit of justice.
