Plot

In the industrial town of Sarnia, Ontario, during the tumultuous backdrop of the 1991 Gulf War, two love stories inexplicably coexist, binding time in a paradoxical embrace. Beatrice, a young supermarket cashier, crosses paths with Henry, a boy her age with a malignant tumor protruding from his bald head. Despite the severity of his illness, an unlikely affection blossoms between them, their youthful love magnified by the specter of Henry's looming surgery and the tangible threat of death. Simultaneously, in the same temporal sphere, we find Bea and Hank, a couple weathered by the relentless march of time. Married for four decades with two grown children, their flame of love has long since flickered out, replaced by a bitter dance of resentment. Their existence is a series of monotonous routines and stinging arguments, a far cry from their once passionate union. In an act of silent rebellion, Hank buys a retirement home without Bea's consent, triggering a financial arms race of vindictive spending. In this unique narrative, the two couples are revealed to be the same, their lives unfolding at the dawn and dusk of their relationship. The Law of Enclosures suspends us in a timeless space, where the intoxicating rush of first love collides with the worn-out bitterness of a love that's run its course. The film explores the cyclical nature of love, the intoxicating highs and devastating lows, portraying the strange coexistence of these two phases as if the intervening 40 years were but a fleeting moment lost in time.
