Plot

Emerging from the shadows of retirement, Ira Wells, a grizzled private investigator from Los Angeles, is thrust back into the fray when his old partner, Harry Regan, staggers to his doorstep, fatally wounded. Driven by a burning desire to uncover the truth behind Harry's untimely death, Ira re-enters a world he'd left behind. His quest is complicated when Charlie Hatter, an old acquaintance with a self-confessed penchant for losing and a knack for Hollywood hustles, brings him into the chaotic orbit of Margo Sterling. Margo, a whimsical, penniless actress, agent, and dressmaker, is entangled in a bizarre case involving her missing cat, Winston. Hired by the seemingly flighty Margo to retrieve Winston from a man named Brian Hemphill, Harry had found himself in a peculiar predicament. Hemphill, holding the cat hostage, claimed Margo had 'borrowed' money from him. As Ira steps into this web of intrigue and deceit, he must piece together the puzzling circumstances and find out just why someone would want Harry dead. Amidst the chaos of vanished cats and unsettled debts, Ira's quest for justice for his fallen comrade treads a path through the underbelly of the city of angels.
