The Lady Vanishes (1938)

In the heart of the rugged mountains of Mandrika, a quaint European country, passengers aboard a delayed train find themselves thrust into a web of intrigue and uncertainty. Among them is Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood), a young English woman returning from a holiday with friends, set to be married once back in England. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she befriends Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty), a middle-aged governess whose presence on the train soon becomes a matter of dispute. Having shared a compartment and tea in the dining car, Iris is certain Miss Froy is aboard. However, her attempts to locate the governess are thwarted by the perplexing denial of her existence by the other passengers. Iris' insistence on Miss Froy's presence is brushed aside, attributed to a possible concussion she received before boarding the train. Undeterred, Iris finds an unlikely ally in Gilbert (Sir Michael Redgrave), a musicologist with whom she had a less than friendly encounter at the inn the previous evening. Together, they traverse the length of the train, weaving through a sea of passengers who seem part of a sinister conspiracy to deny Miss Froy's existence. As the train chugs its way through the mountainous terrain, the mystery deepens. The pair must not only prove the existence of Miss Froy, but also uncover the chilling reason behind her sudden vanishing.
