Plot

Set amid the elaborate tapestry of the 1850s, "The Invisible Woman" tells the captivating tale of Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones), a rising actress of modest talent who ensnares the attention of the renowned British scribe, Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes). Weary of his uninspiring relationship with his scholarly wife, Catherine (Joanna Scanlan), Dickens finds solace in the insightful company of Nelly, who he enthrallingly takes as his mistress, with the approval of her mother, Mrs. Frances Ternan (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas). Thrust into a tempestuous liaison with this literary titan, Nelly is given a glimpse into a world of opulence and privilege, a life that was an elusive dream for most women of her era. However, beneath these grandeur lays Dickens's relentless emotional cruelty and his unyielding resolve to keep their relationship clandestine. Torn in this tumultuous whirlwind, Nelly is left to evaluate her significance in her own life and must grapple with deciding whether the cost she's paying for this forbidden love is one she can endure. "The Invisible Woman" is a vivid portrayal of a woman's struggle for identity and love in a world dominated by a man's desire, a poignant narrative brought to life by the passion of forbidden love and the harsh realities of societal norms.
