Plot

In the wake of a tragic orphaning, young Robert Shannon is thrust from his familiar Irish homestead and voyages to the distant shores of Langford, Scotland. Here, he finds sanctuary in the home of his maternal grandparents. Life under the roof of his frugal grandfather is laced with hardship, yet softened by the affectionate presence of his carefree great-grandfather, compassionate grandmother, and benevolent aunt and uncle. Thrust into a new school, Robert - or Robbie, as he becomes known - initially stumbles, but soon finds his stride, and in doing so, forges close bonds with Gavin and Allison, two friendships that deepen into love as the sands of time trickle by. As boyhood blooms into adolescence, Robbie's aspirations crystallise, and he yearns to swap the grey skies of Langford for the gleaming halls of a medical school. With dreams of a white coat and stethoscope, he is propelled towards his goal by the unwavering support of his family, save for his grandfather. His ticket to this dream - a coveted scholarship that stands as his only escape from a future ensnared in the grime and grit of the local boiler-works.
