Plot

In the vibrant theatre scene of 18th century London, the celebrated Great Garrick (Brian Aherne) stands as the unrivaled crown jewel. When the esteemed Comedie Francaise in Paris extends an invitation, Garrick is set to grace France with his captivating performances. However, a misinterpretation of his words results in a scandal that stirs the French theatre community. Believing that Garrick has proclaimed he's 'off to teach the French how to act', the Comedie Francaise troupe takes umbrage, sparking a flame of indignation that fuels a grand scheme to humiliate the London star upon his arrival. Their theatrical plot unfolds in an unsuspecting inn, commandeered by the Comedie Francaise actors on Garrick's journey to Paris. Yet, unbeknownst to them, Garrick has caught wind of their ruse and resolves to play along, adding to the theatrics with his own touch of comedic charm. The entrancing narrative takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of a solitary, enchanting countess in need of a room. Garrick, mistaking her for a part of the troupe, treats her accordingly, leading to a whirlwind of emotions as she finds herself falling for him. Adding to the ensemble is Edward Everett Horton, who brings a unique flair to his role as The Great Garrick's loyal valet. The unfolding drama promises a captivating blend of comedy, romance, and theatrical mischief, all set against the backdrop of Europe's dazzling theatre world.
