Plot

In the quietly stirring town of Eugene, Oregon, 19-year-old Mercer, grappling with the recent death of his mother, embarks on an unplanned journey of discovery and reflection. Compelled by his longing to notify his estranged half-brother—18 years his senior—of their mother's passing, he impulsively commandeers a car from a local car wash, setting his sights on the brother's last known address in Shelter Cove. However, the journey proves more complex than Mercer anticipates. Arriving in Shelter Cove, he finds not his brother but a lingering resentment, an invisible obstacle he must confront. Undeterred, he tracks a new lead to Reno, pausing en route in Fallon to reconnect with a childhood acquaintance. Reno proves fruitless, yet the girl offers an enticing proposal: a promise of intimacy if Mercer chauffeurs her and her two friends to Mohave. As his original plans veer off course, Mercer finds himself on a path he never intended. Throughout this winding odyssey, the car's rightful owner unexpectedly becomes a spectral companion, her voice emanating from a forgotten cell phone left in the vehicle. In her arch yet kindly tone, she provides a sense of empathy that Mercer hadn't realized he needed, subtly altering the course of his journey and his understanding of himself. In this stolen car, on highways under vast skies, Mercer's quest to find his long-lost brother evolves into a profound exploration of his own identity. The question remains: will he find his brother, and when he does, what will be the consequences of this unexpected adventure?
