The Gauntlet (1977)

In the sun-scorched landscape of Phoenix, Arizona, we meet our protagonist, the alcoholic detective Ben Shockley (Clint Eastwood), who is teetering on the brink of becoming a derelict. His career, much like his life, is in a mediocre standstill until Chief Commissary Blakelock (William Prince) assigns him an apparently minor task – to escort witness Gus Mally (Sondra Locke) from the glittering neon chaos of Las Vegas, Nevada for a seemingly insignificant trial. Once in Las Vegas, Shockley's world is upended. Mally is not a simple witness but a fiery, intelligent prostitute armed with a college degree, mob connections, and damning information that could topple a formidable mobster. Her audacious demeanor hints at the lethal odds stacked against her, stirring Shockley's dormant suspicions. His worst fears are confirmed when the mafia descends upon them, their lethal intent as clear as daylight - to silence Mally before she can testify.
