Plot

In the heart of the roaring 1920s, a time when the Mann Act renders it illegal for a man to whisk a woman across state lines for immoral acts, we find the cunning Nicky Stumpo. Nicky, a married man, finds himself ensnared by the charms of the affluent Freddie Bigard. Unable to marry her himself and yearning to cross state lines, he concocts a plan as audacious as it is risky. He convinces his friend Oscar Sullivan, a man on the run from the law due to embezzlement charges, to marry Freddie. Together, the trio plan to disguise their unorthodox arrangement under assumed surnames, posing as an extended family with Oscar and Freddie as the married couple, and Nicky as Freddie's innocent brother. Behind closed doors, however, a different truth unfolds as Oscar becomes the unromantic third wheel in Freddie and Nicky's clandestine love affair. But love is not Nicky's only motivator. He covets Freddie's inherited wealth, a fact he tries to downplay to Oscar. As the plot thickens, Oscar also becomes enchanted by Freddie's allure and fortune. Further complicating matters, Freddie announces her intention to give away her wealth, leaving Nicky and Oscar scrambling to devise a plan to secure her fortune. In a twist of greed and desperation, they decide to eliminate Freddie, making it look like an accident or suicide. However, they soon discover that they are woefully inept at murder, adding another layer of comic chaos to their lives. "The Fortune" is a dark comedy that weaves a tale of love, greed, and a harebrained murder plot set against the backdrop of the lively 1920s, where nothing is as simple as it seems, and everyone has a scheme.
