Plot

In the midst of the globally broadcast Apollo moon landing in 1969, a young boy named Jim stumbles upon a captivating tale at a quaint English country fair. There, he encounters the enigmatic nonagenarian, Julius Bedford, who narrates a riveting account from his own past. In 1909, as a fledgling writer, Bedford crossed paths with the peculiar Professor Cavor, the mastermind behind 'Cavorite,' a substance with the power to defy gravity. Together, they embarked on an extraordinary adventure, constructing a sphere propelled by Cavorite that transported them to the moon's ethereal landscape. Their lunar journey led them into the clutches of the Selenites, ant-like lunar inhabitants. While Bedford yearned for his escape, Cavor remained, fascinated by the opportunity to converse with the alien entities. Back on Earth, news reached Bedford through crackling wireless transmissions that Cavor had taken his own life and the Selenites', in a desperate bid to thwart a potential invasion of Earth. As Jim absorbs this fantastical tale, he joins his parents to watch the Apollo landing. Amidst the televised spectacle, he spots a Selenite lurking behind a lunar rock, its gaze fixated on the astronauts, bringing Bedford's tale chillingly close to reality.
