Plot

In the year 33 A.D., the world stands on the precipice of change. Emperor Tiberius, disturbed by celestial omens and earthly tremors alike, finds his rule threatened by prophecies of a new kingdom rising in the East. The gods of old, it seems, have met their demise. Amid these portents of upheaval, Tiberius calls upon a figure from his past, Tito Valerio Tauro, Rome's most astute investigator, currently languishing in exile after delving too deeply into the death of the revered Emperor Augustus. Tiberius offers Tauro a path to redemption and a mission of unparalleled importance - uncover the truth behind the death and alleged resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, the Judean rabbi. The Emperor suspects this event is more than mere hearsay, linked inexorably to the prophecies that have cast a shadow over his reign. Tauro, a man of reason and skepticism, is thrust into a world of enigmas in Judea, a challenge to his intellect and beliefs. Jerusalem is a city of illusions, its Governor, Pilate, a treacherous figure navigating the tumultuous waters of Pharisee and Zealot politics. In his quest for truth, Tauro encounters figures of faith and fanaticism: Saul of Tarsus, a staunch defender of Mosaic tradition and a relentless persecutor of Christians; the enigmatic Judas of Iscariot, said to be a disciple of Jesus; and the humble fisherman, Simon Peter, reputed leader of the Christians. These men, though humble, wield a formidable power in the form of an unshakeable faith, an idea that baffles and alarms the rational Tauro. Tauro's skepticism prompts him to dismiss Jesus as a charlatan, his resurrection a well-orchestrated hoax preying on the gullible followers from the underbelly of society – fishermen, farmers, slaves – all of them treated as equals, even women, in the eyes of the Christian God. However, it is one of these women, a believer named Tabitha, who holds the key to understanding the enigma of Jesus's death. Young yet wise, Tabitha unveils not only the mystery of Jesus's fate but also the mystery of love to the hardened Roman investigator, bringing him closer to the completion of his imperial mandate.
