The Fighter (1952)

In the heart of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, a wave of terror sweeps the countryside as the Federal forces of the reviled Mexican President Porfirio Díaz obliterate any flicker of rebellion. Amidst this turmoil, the supporters of Opposition leader Francisco Madero engineer a desperate resistance against Diaz, a struggle hampered by a dire need for financial and military resources. This struggle finds an unlikely hero in Felipe Rivera, the sole survivor from a village devastated by the Federal troops in their pursuit of rebel leader Durango. Fleeing the blood-soaked soil of his homeland, Felipe crosses the border into El Paso, Texas, where he finds refuge in a Mexican print shop. This humble establishment serves as a beacon for the revolution, disseminating propaganda to illuminate the plight of the Mexican rebels to the American public. Felipe joins this cause, working as a helper and finding an additional source of income — and a means to support the revolution — in the brutal, adrenaline-fueled world of prize-fighting. As Felipe’s reputation grows within the boxing circuit, he also becomes an invaluable asset to the revolution, entrusted with vital missions across the border. On one such mission, he discovers Durango's capture and imprisonment by Federal troops. Undeterred, Felipe hatches a daring plan to liberate Durango, only to be met with a sobering reality — the revolution needs weapons more than words. Returning to El Paso, Felipe is faced with the daunting task of raising five thousand dollars to purchase 1000 surplus rifles from the U.S. Army. His only hope lies in the boxing ring. Boxing promoter Roberts offers him a chance at glory and a fight against the reigning champion in a winner-take-all match. Felipe, undeterred by his lack of size and experience, is fueled by a burning desire to arm his fellow rebels and avenge his family and village. His every punch carries the weight of a revolution, each bout a battle for survival, freedom, and retribution.
