Plot

In the darkly comedic tapestry of "The End" (1978), we follow the life of Wendell "Sonny" Lawson, a man tragically cursed with a terminal illness. Confronting the grim prospect of a slow, dwindling demise, Sonny chooses to seize control of his own destiny. Keeping his fate hidden from his ex-wife, mistress, and daughter, he embarks on a self-devised mission to hasten his departure from life. After a botched attempt involving a lethal cocktail of pills, Sonny wakes up in the sterile confines of a psychiatric ward. Here, he strikes a peculiar camaraderie with Marlon Borunki, a fellow patient whose grasp on reality is as tenuous as it is humorous. Together, they devise a series of schemes for Sonny to meet his end, each attempt proving as futile as it is darkly comedic. Sonny's journey takes him to the edge of existence, where he attempts to drown in the ocean's unfathomable depths. However, in this moment of despair, an epiphany washes over him, stirring a newfound desire to cling onto life. But while Sonny's will for survival sparks, Marlon's intentions remain ominously uncertain. "The End" chronicles Sonny's poignant, often hilariously unsuccessful attempts to orchestrate his own demise. As the clock ticks down on his final six months, the question lingers - will Sonny succeed, or will life's unpredictable symphony play a different tune? This tragicomic odyssey is a captivating exploration of life, death, and the unexpected turns in between.
