Plot

In the wake of the war, newlyweds Bob and Betty yearn for a fresh start. Bob, the ambitious city slicker, surprises his equally urban bride, Betty, with his latest venture - a chicken farm. Unbeknownst to Betty, their new home is far from a rural idyll, instead, it's a dilapidated property nestled amidst the verdant countryside. As the couple embarks on this unexpected journey of rustic living, they meet a colourful medley of eccentric neighbors. From the one-of-a-kind Ma and Pa Kettle, who struggle with domestic chores while raising their industrious son, Tom, to the rhyme-spouting Billy Reed, who peddles everything under the sun, and the nosy Birdie Hicks, their daily lives are anything but ordinary. Betty finds herself battling nature's whims and enduring the inconveniences of rural life, all while Bob blissfully immerses himself in the world of egg business. The silent Geoduck and Corkscrew, and the aged Emily with her hard-to-spot husband Albert add to the unique tapestry of their new life. However, the rural charm is overshadowed when the sophisticated Harriet Putnam, owner of the magnificent Bella Vista Farm, appears to ignite a romantic spark towards Bob. With every passing day, Betty realizes that country living may not be her cup of tea. But the real test of her patience brews amidst the rooster's crow and the clucking hens, as she navigates her husband's enthusiasm and the glamorous Harriet's seemingly predatory interest in him. How will Betty adapt to her new life and protect her marriage amidst the allure and challenges of the countryside? The Egg and I paints a delightful, immersive tale of love, resilience, and the unexpected adventures of rural living.
