Dr. Kate Lawrence, popularly known as Dr. Kate to her adoring fans, is a relationship guru residing in the tranquil coastal town of Puget Sound. She hosts a widely-followed video blog, "Just - No", dispensing advice about love and compatibility, inspired by her parents' failed marriage. Poised to announce her engagement to Bryan Pankhurst, a Seattle-based businessman, on her live webcast, her world takes a dramatic turn when Bryan admits his love for another woman off-camera. This leaves Kate's anticipated engagement announcement hanging in the balance. In the midst of Kate's heartbreak, Lucas Wright, a skilled carpenter and her childhood friend, steps into the spotlight. Seizing the moment as the cameras roll again, Lucas declares that he is Kate's fiancé. The pair share a complex past, their friendship tainted by a high school incident that left them at odds, their relationship never fully recovering. Yet, Lucas's unexpected announcement saves Kate from public humiliation, preserving her professional image. At the persuasion of Kate's agent, Pam, Lucas and Kate decide to maintain the façade of their engagement, even to the extent of planning a wedding. Yet, as they resolve their past differences, an undeniable attraction begins to develop.
