In the heart of Los Angeles, Norah Larkin, a diligent telephone operator, finds herself celebrating her birthday in solitude, her only company being a photograph of her overseas soldier fiancé. As she clings onto his image, she opens his latest letter, expecting romantic reassurances, but is instead met with a heart-shattering revelation: he plans to marry an Army nurse he met in Japan.
