Plot

Caught in the throbbing pulse of their honeymoon, Joan and Peter Allison find themselves sharing a Hungarian train compartment with the enigmatic Dr. Vitus Verdegast. The courtly, yet tragically haunted man is journeying home, returning to the echoes of a town he gallantly defended before being swallowed by the iron jaws of war captivity for fifteen long years. Their paths intertwine further when a violent mountain storm wrecks their hotel-bound bus, leaving Joan injured and their fate in the arms of an unexpected refuge. The refuge takes the form of a fortress-like home, an architectural marvel perched on a blood-soaked battlefield, belonging to the renowned architect Hjalmar Poelzig. But as the walls of this imposing refuge close in, Verdegast is confronted by a chilling revelation about his wife's fate and the sorrowful loss of his daughter. The home is a shrine of betrayal, harboring a bitter narrative that links Poelzig not only to Verdegast's years of incarceration but the heart-wrenching disappearance of his cherished family. In the shadowy corners of Poelzig's fortress, Verdegast and the Allisons are entangled in a sinister game, a chilling test of wit and courage. A game of chess that holds the balance of their lives delicately in its hands. As the pieces move, secrets are unveiled, and the true horror of their predicament begins to unfurl, leaving them all at the mercy of the home's master and his dark past. The Black Cat weaves an intricate tale of betrayal, loss, and a desperate fight for survival.
