Plot

In the era preceding World War I, James Apperson, the carefree progeny of a prosperous businessman, enjoys a life of privilege and comfort, his days gilded by his father's wealth. Engaged to the captivating Justyn Reed, James is somewhat of a disappointment to his austere father, a role dutifully offset by his more serious brother who carries the mantle of the family business. When the drums of war echo across the U.S., the euphoria of patriotism sweeps James off his feet, compelling him to enlist. In the military's austere embrace, he forges a bond with two working-class comrades, Slim and Bull. Together, they embark on a journey to distant France, their camaraderie a beacon in the looming shadow of war. In the rustic charm of France, away from the front lines, James crosses paths with Melisandre, a young Frenchwoman whose allure tugs at his heartstrings. Amidst the laughter, friendship, and blossoming love, life unfurls like a beautiful tapestry for James and his companions. But as they step into the front lines, the grim realities of war dawn upon them, ripping through their serene bubble and forever altering their lives. The horrors witnessed turn the once-privileged James into a man forever marked by the stains of war.
