Ten Who Dared (1960)

In the late 1860s, the landscape of the USA had been extensively charted, save for the enigmatic Colorado River region. To fill this void, the U.S. government appoints a one-handed geologist and ex-Union Army Major, John Wesley Powell, to map the uncharted territory. Assembling a crew is a challenge, as trustworthy, skilled men are a rarity in the aftermath of the Civil War. Undeterred, Major Powell curates a motley crew of nine diverse men, who embark from Green River, Wyoming, in four rowboats. This eclectic team comprises individuals from all walks of life, each with their unique quirks and backgrounds. There's an uneasy truce between two former army officers who served on opposing sides during the war. One boat houses a recovering alcoholic and a taunting British drunkard. Major Powell's second-in-command is his brother, Walter, whose brusque manner often rubs the team the wrong way. Walter's abrasive behavior is justified by the Major, citing his traumatic experience in a POW camp during the war. William Dunn, a trapper and frontier scout, joins the team seeking isolation from civilization. Billy 'Missouri' Hawkins, the team's cook, raises suspicions of being a fugitive. The final members are the Howland brothers, Oramel and Seneca. While the team sets off brimming with enthusiasm, their contrasting personalities soon instigate clashes. The voyage is fraught with adversities - treacherous river rapids, harsh weather, dwindling supplies, unexpected mishaps, rugged river banks, venomous snakes and hostile Ute Indians. The crowning challenge is a rumored colossal waterfall at the river's end, a perilous hurdle for any audacious traveler brave enough to navigate the Colorado river. The journey is as much a test of their survival skills as it is a trial of their unity, resilience, and will to endure.
