Caught in the whirlpool of nostalgia during his ten-year reunion, Tom Lee finds himself transported back to his days at Chilton, an esteemed boys' prep school, a place where generations of families strive to etch their names. Yet, Tom stands out like a delicate rose amidst a field of thorns, his interests and passions setting him apart from the rest. This difference earns him the nickname 'sister-boy' from his peers, a moniker that clings to him like an unwanted shadow. Tom's world is a canvas painted with the finesse of tennis rather than the brute force of group sports, the elegance of sewing and cooking, the serenity of gardening, and the soothing rhythm of folk music. He's seen through the lens of the dramatic club only when he wears a woman's guise, and even his gait and hairstyle are alien to the norm. The only beacon of understanding in this tumultuous sea of alienation is his roommate, Al Thompson, who battles against the tide to stand by him, but the odds seem insurmountable. Tom's father, Herb Lee, an alumnus of Chilton, watches his son from the sidelines, his fear for the family's reputation eclipsing his empathy for his son. Amidst this storm, Tom finds solace in Laura Reynolds, the enchanting wife of his dormitory house master, Bill Reynolds, a quintessential Chilton man. Witnessing Tom's struggles, Laura extends a helping hand, her heart aching for the young man. As time wears on, the torment doesn't relent for Tom, and Laura's desperation to help him grows. Through this journey, Laura begins to unravel the deeper reasons behind her fierce determination to help Tom. This revelation propels her on a path to not only aid Tom in his struggle but also discover her own authentic self.
