Plot

In the rough-and-tumble world of 1930s taxi driving, independent cabbie Pop Riley finds himself at odds with a corporate entity hungry to monopolize the streets. When defending his turf leads to a fatal encounter, Pop is sent to prison, leaving his daughter Sue to rally the remaining independent drivers. Stepping up to the challenge, Sue's plea for peaceful resistance is met with fury by Matt Nolan, a fiery-tempered driver who craves action against their adversaries. Their differences, however, don't stop Matt and Sue from falling for each other, a romance both heated and fragile, fueled by Matt's fiery temper and Sue's fear of it. Their love story becomes a twirling dance of passion and conflict, a dance that even leads to a brawl on their way to the marriage license bureau. Their wedding night, however, brings a chilling confrontation with Buck Gerard, the sinister force behind the attacks on the independent drivers. When Gerard's violence claims the life of Matt's brother, Dan, Matt is consumed by a thirst for vengeance, a path that Sue is desperate to deter him from. Adding to the tension, Marie, Gerard's lover, begs Sue for money to aid Gerard's escape, a request that leads Matt straight to Gerard's hideout. In a heart-pounding climax, Sue and Marie manage to keep Matt from Gerard just long enough for the police to intervene. However, Matt's desire for revenge comes to a head with a desperate act of aggression, leaving Gerard dead and Matt's relationship with Sue hanging in the balance. As Sue contemplates leaving Matt for good, a final plea from him gives their love story one more chance to survive in a world where love, like taxi driving, is a fight for survival on every corner.
