Plot

In the late 1950s, Spencer Scott, a black high school senior, finds himself grappling with the complexities of adolescence and the harsh realities of racial prejudice in a predominantly white New England community. Caught between the expectations of his white peers, who only accept him due to his athletic prowess, and the disapproval of their parents, Spencer's life is a balancing act on a tightrope of societal norms and racial boundaries. The Scott family resides in a middle-class neighborhood, where Spencer's parents instill in him the importance of self-respect and racial pride, yet paradoxically urge him to compromise with his white friends. His only solace seems to be his spirited grandmother, who alone understands his simmering frustration and the deep-seated anger of his nascent adulthood. Spencer's world is further complicated when his innocent crush on a white classmate is met with stern resistance from her father, adding another layer to his struggle. A turning point arrives when Spencer, unable to tolerate the biased portrayal of the Civil War in his history class, protests vehemently, triggering a series of unpleasant consequences that lead to his expulsion. As he wanders into the black section of the town, Spencer’s encounter with four prostitutes at a bar offers him an entirely new perspective on life, race, and his place in society. Embarking on a tumultuous journey of self-discovery, Spencer's story paints a poignant picture of growing up black in the early stages of the U.S.'s Civil Rights Era.
