In the tumultuous era of the Edo Period, we meet Kanemi Sanzaemon, a virtuoso swordsman beset by personal demons. Three years prior, he had slain Renko, a corrupt concubine of the influential daimyo, Tabu Ukyou. Surprisingly, his punishment for this heinous act was lenient, resulting in a mere one-year sentence. Upon his release, he returns to his clan, only to be greeted by the tragic news of his wife Mutsue's demise. In the aftermath, Kanemi finds solace in the company of his late wife's niece, Satoo, who secretly harbors romantic feelings for him. Her presence gradually lightens his once grim perspective on life. Concurrently, Kanemi cultivates a singular "bird-catching" sword technique, a defining trait that enhances his already formidable skills. As the tale unfolds, Kanemi's innovative technique will soon face its inaugural challenge in a high stakes duel against the formidable Hayatonosho Obiya.
