Switchback (1997)

F.B.I. investigator Frank LaCrosse is drawn into an ominous vortex when he comes home to a horrific scene—his house violated, his son vanished, and his babysitter, Missy, brutally murdered. This deadly tableau bears the signature of a shadowy serial killer whose reign of terror has spanned nearly two years. Driven by desperation, Frank's relentless pursuit for justice leads him to the dusty plains of Amarillo, Texas. Here, two more victims, bearing the chilling marks of the same ruthless killer, have been discovered, their lives brutally cut short. Amidst the turmoil, local Sheriff Buck Olmstead and his Deputy Nate Booker grapple with the gruesome killings. Simultaneously, they're caught in an escalating tension of a heated electoral feud with their rival, police chief Jack McGinnis. Meanwhile, a wandering ex-doctor, Lane Dixon, crosses paths with Bob Goodall, a man haunted by his railroad past. As they navigate their own personal demons, the town's mechanic, Clyde 'Shorty' Callahan, becomes the newest name on the serial killer's gruesome roster. Through the piercing Texas heat and the chilling mountain cold, Frank's hopes and prayers are pinned on capturing the deranged sociopath before he vanishes, possibly forever, into the anonymity of the sprawling rocky mountains.
