Mikael Blomkvist's journalism career ends in disgrace, so he accepts a wealthy client's deal to write a book about the man's family. Blomkvist learns the client's niece went missing 40 years previously, and the real reason for the assignment involves finding out what happened to her. Blomkvist wonders whether the disappearance connects to several mysterious and unsolved serial killings. The journalist teams with a computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, to help him solve the mystery. Lisbeth tries to overcome her tragic situation and help Blomkvist with his dangerous mission.
