Plot

In the gritty underbelly of urban existence, Rick, an assertive, street-smart hustler, finds himself wearied by the ceaseless cycle of fleeting encounters and aimless wheeling-dealing. Devoid of conventional familial ties, he grapples with the emotional scars left by an absentee father, making him one of the "strays" of society. His life is a tightly controlled fortress, designed to fend off dependency, his vulnerabilities concealed beneath a hardened shell of indifference. However, his world is about to take an unexpected turn. When Rick crosses paths with Heather, an embodiment of the wholesome "girl-next-door", he glimpses a novel pathway towards a committed, meaningful relationship. The spark between them is palpable from the start, but Rick's street-smart sass and unpredictable temper threaten to snuff out their budding romance before it takes root. As he attempts to integrate into Heather's world, Rick faces backlash from his eternally juvenile companions, their ambitions confined to high-speed thrill-seeking, slow-paced indulgence, and relentless defiance. Yet, akin to his childhood avatar, Ferdinand the Bull, Rick is a warrior molded by circumstance, primed for a transformation towards a more gentle and compassionate temperament. Strays (1997) is a gritty yet hopeful exploration of navigating life's harsh realities while yearning for love and connection. It's a journey of self-discovery, a struggle between the hardened exterior and the softer inner self that lies beneath, waiting to emerge.
