In the heart of Australia, a financially struggling widower-turned-businessman stumbles upon an unexpected tax loophole catering to same-sex couples. Desperate for a financial break, he cleverly persuades his best friend, also mourning the loss of his spouse, to pose as his gay partner. Assured that their tiny town of 652 residents will remain oblivious, they stealthily submit the necessary paperwork. However, fate intervenes when their confidential mail from the government accidentally comes undone and falls into the hands of the town's prying gossipmonger. Unbeknownst to the pair, their secret is rapidly disseminated throughout their close-knit community. Meanwhile, the contents of the letter reveal an impending visit from a tax inspector assigned to investigate their claim. Cornered, they make a hasty decision to embrace their fabricated lifestyle convincingly. They seek guidance from a flamboyant local hairdresser and venture into the vibrant and alien world of a gay nightclub in Sydney. Thus begins a comedic journey of two men learning to act gay while keeping their town, and the tax inspector, none the wiser. This humorous tale highlights the lengths ordinary people will go to when faced with extraordinary circumstances.
