Stand by for Action (1942)

In the tumultuous world of the U.S. Navy, the paths of two distinct officers cross. Harvard-educated Lieutenant Gregg Masterman (Robert Taylor), scion of the esteemed Boston Back Bay Mastermans, was bred for the sea, learning its whims while sailing his yacht to silver cup victories. His quick ascension in rank lands him the post of Junior Aide to the stern Rear Admiral Stephen Thomas (Charles Laughton). On the opposite end of the spectrum is Lieutenant Commander Martin J. Roberts (Brian Donlevy). A gritty World War I enlistee, he earned his stripes slowly, retiring in 1935. However, destiny isn't finished with him yet. Summoned back into service, he's appointed as the Executive Officer of the aging destroyer "Cranshaw." Impressed by Roberts' steely determination, Admiral Thomas promotes him to captain the World War I relic, the destroyer "Warren," drawing amused scoffs from Masterman. Much to his surprise, Masterman is then assigned as the Executive Officer of the "Warren," serving under Roberts. Their mission? To rendezvous with a convoy that has already embarked from Hawaii for the United States, shepherded by the flagship cruiser, "Chattanooga," under Admiral Thomas's command. En route, they encounter a lifeboat carrying an unusual mix of survivors: two seasoned seamen, two women, and twenty infants, victims of a sunken evacuation boat from Hawaii. Roberts tosses Masterman into the deep end, assigning him the responsibility of caring for the infants. They finally join the convoy, but the tranquility is shattered when Japanese forces attack. The "Chattanooga" takes a hit, drawing the enemy's focus to the "Warren." This thrilling wartime drama blends the high seas' unpredictability with the raw courage of men. "Stand by for Action" is a testament to duty, honor, and unexpected heroism in the face of adversity.
