Plot

In the heart of New York, Harold Swift, affectionately known as Speedy, adores two things above all else - the New York Yankees and his charming sweetheart, Jane Dillon. Speedy's infatuation with baseball is so fervent that it obstructs his ability to maintain a steady job, whether as a soda jerk or a cab driver. After a delightful day at Coney Island with Jane, Speedy feels the tug of matrimony. However, he must first secure a job and help Jane resolve her grandfather, Pop Dillon's affairs. Pop Dillon is the proud owner of New York's last horse-drawn streetcar, a charming relic that operates in the city's most picturesque quarter. Big streetcar corporations, eager to acquire Pop's business for a paltry sum, are frustrated by Speedy's advice to Pop to hold out for a lucrative deal, especially in light of a planned city-wide streetcar merger. This merger cannot proceed until all smaller franchises like Pop's are bought out. Consequently, the corporations resort to underhanded tactics to sabotage Pop's business. Undeterred, Speedy, the lovable underdog, steps into the role of Pop's defender. From his cab, he even delivers Babe Ruth to Yankee Stadium, only to be swept up in the thrill of the game. With the aid of Pop's elderly comrades and a stray dog who adopts Speedy after their Coney Island adventure, they rally against the corporate giants. Their mission is to safeguard Pop's legacy and ensure he receives the profitable deal he rightfully deserves. As the corporations’ schemes escalate, it's up to Speedy and his band of unlikely heroes to outwit them and save the last remnant of a bygone era in New York.
