Plot

In the vibrant era of the 1960s, the movie "Sparkle" unfolds the stirring tale of three talented sisters who dare to reach for the stars amidst a backdrop of family discord and personal trials. Sparkle, played by Jordin Sparks, is a gifted songwriter, blessed with a melodic voice that could captivate an audience, yet she remains hesitant, held back by fear and her mother Emma's (Whitney Houston) stern disapproval. Emma, a former entertainer, has tasted the bitterness of a career in showbiz and refuses to let her daughters sing anywhere but the church. Against these odds, Sparkle convinces her elder sister, Sister (Carmen Ejogo), to perform one of her original songs at a local talent show. The overwhelming applause that follows is a testament to Sister's star-like quality and Sparkle's songwriting prowess. This unexpected success captures the attention of the ambitious Stix (Derek Luke), who proposes the formation of a singing group, integrating all three sisters, including the pragmatic Dolores (Tika Sumpter). Their harmonious act soon evolves into a local sensation, attracting major label interest. However, the allure of fame starts to unravel their close-knit family ties. As they grapple with their angry mother's resentment, Sister finds herself entangled in a tumultuous relationship with a volatile comedian (Mike Epps). Meanwhile, Sparkle is caught in a whirlwind romance with Stix. As their lives become increasingly entangled with the complexities of the entertainment industry, each sister must navigate the difficult terrain of ambition, love, and family loyalty. "Sparkle" is a compelling musical drama, painting a vivid picture of dreams pursued and the prices paid.
