Soul Men (2008)

In the wake of the sudden death of R&B luminary Marcus Hooks, Floyd Henderson and Louis Hinds, the original soulful duo known as "The Real Deal," find themselves thrust back into the limelight. VH-1 extends an invitation to the pair for a memorial tribute at the iconic Apollo Theater, sparking a journey neither is prepared for. Floyd, weary from the monotony of retirement, craves the thrill of the stage, while Louis, a contemplative ex-con, is less enthusiastic about revisiting their shared history. Their past is fraught with tension and resentment, having been tangled in a love triangle with Louis's ex-wife, Odetta, and their friendship has been strained for twenty long years of silence. Faced with the necessity of a reunion, Floyd's desperation meets Louis's reluctant agreement. With Louis's firm refusal to fly, the duo embarks on a cross-country road trip from L.A. to New York in Floyd's flamboyant Cadillac, leaving them with a scant five days. As they traverse the country, they must not only rekindle their rusty vocal talents but also navigate the rocky terrain of their fractured friendship and unresolved past. Along their journey, however, they encounter the harsh realities of their aging bodies - Floyd's ailing hip and Louis's failing kidneys. In the face of these odds, the reluctant soul men are left with one burning question: will they even make it to the Apollo Theater to pay tribute to their fallen leader and perhaps revive their once legendary status? Their journey is a testament to the enduring power of friendship, music, and the human spirit, a rhythm and blues odyssey that will keep viewers captivated until the final note.
