Plot

Set against the unforgiving backdrop of northern New South Wales, "Sons of Matthew" traces the tale of the O'Riordan family, as they navigate the trials of farm life in the valley of Cullenbenbong. Led by Irish patriarch Matthew and his English wife Jane, the family of seven children grapples with the harsh realities of drought, flood, and fire. Their world intersects with the McAllisters', a neighbouring family, when tragedy befalls them, and the O'Riordans take under their wing the McAllister's sole daughter, Cathy. As the seasons shift and the O'Riordan children mature into adulthood, the eldest brother, Shane, is captivated by tales of unspoiled rainforest on the Lamington plateau in southern Queensland. Filled with a pioneering spirit, the O'Riordan brothers, alongside Angus McAllister and his daughter Cathy, decide to venture into the virgin Australian bush, their hearts set on establishing a farm. Tensions simmer and emotions flare as the brothers toil to clear the land and construct a humble slab hut, and the close-knit group is faced with the complexities of love and rivalry. Cathy, engaged to the second O'Riordan son, Barney, finds her heart torn as she falls for Shane. A storm of epic proportions strikes the budding farm, echoing the tempest of emotions within the group, leading to a fierce confrontation between the brothers that leaves Shane injured. However, the strength of family bonds and the resilience of their spirit prove more potent than any storm. Barney works tirelessly to earn his brother's forgiveness, and Cathy and Shane find solace in each other's arms. Set under the wide Australian sky, "Sons of Matthew" is a powerful exploration of love, loyalty, and the unbreakable bond of family.
