Plot
In the brutal throes of World War II, a soldier, George Taylor, suffers a grenade strike that disfigures his face and erases his memory. After a period of recovery, he's discharged from the army, armed only with a letter from a man named Larry Cravat. Determined to unravel the mystery of his identity, George embarks on a relentless quest to Los Angeles in search of Cravat.
His journey leads him through a labyrinth of clues; a bank, a shabby hotel, a Turkish bath, and a bustling night-club. Along the way, he crosses paths with Hubert, a ruthless henchman of the enigmatic Anzelmo, who leaves him battered at the doorstep of the charismatic night-club singer, Christy Smith. Intrigued by George's story, Christy and her influential friend, Mel Phillips, decide to aid him in his pursuit.
Their collective efforts reveal that Larry Cravat was a private investigator who mysteriously came into possession of $2,000,000 from a now-deceased Nazi. But the plot thickens when George learns Cravat is wanted for a dockside murder, and his own name is implicated. As the web of deceit tightens, a tip leads George to the Terminal Dock, where Anzelmo unveils that Cravat has vanished and he believes that George is the accomplice-turned-killer.
The trail of breadcrumbs continues to a man named Conroy, a witness to the crime, now interned at the Lambeth Sanatorium after a hit-and-run incident. George's meeting with Conroy uncovers the location of the hidden suitcase containing the money just before Conroy succumbs to a fatal stab wound. Now, on the precipice of solving the mystery, George must confront the truth of his forgotten past, a past that could lead him to a life of riches or a future behind bars.
