Snakeskin (2001)

In the tranquil suburbs of Christchurch, perceived as 'the world's safest place', resides Alice (Lynskey), a young woman yearning for a life steeped in American-style escapades - a whirlwind of crime, passion, narcotics and more. Her affections are desired by her best friend, Craig (O'Gorman), who, in a bid to appear more gallant, rebrands himself as Johnny. The allure of Johnny's self-restored convertible Valiant keeps Alice by his side, as they traverse the southeastern roads of New Zealand, thirsting for exhilaration and picking up wayfarers along the way. Their mundane existence is disrupted when they encounter Seth, a charismatic stranger donning snakeskin boots and a cowboy hat, who couldn't be more American if he tried. A fugitive on the run, Seth is pursued by a vengeful skinhead gang he swindled, a pair in a psychedelic truck he conned out of a sizable drug stash, and a formidable Maori biker. Alice is instantly bewitched by Seth's charm, inciting Johnny's jealousy. Seth slyly convinces Alice to embark on a perilous journey with him, leading them away from their safety net and towards the peril-laden routes across the Southern Alps. As they steer towards the coast, Alice's adventure takes a sinister turn, with disturbing hallucinations clouding her reality. But the question remains - are these mere figments of her imagination, or does Seth truly possess otherworldly abilities?
