Freeway (1996)

In a twisted adaptation of the beloved 'Little Red Riding Hood' tale, 'Freeway' catapults us into the gritty 1990s. Plucky 15-year-old Vanessa Lutz, after her mother's arrest for prostitution and her stepfather's for child molestation, defiantly chooses to escape the system. Instead of returning to the impersonal foster system, she embarks on a quest to seek out her estranged grandmother, a stranger nestled in the heart of a nondescript trailer park. As Vanessa's journey unfolds, her decrepit car gives out, leaving her stranded on the desolate roadside. The appearance of Bob Wolverton, a seemingly respectable counselor for troubled boys, offers a shimmer of hope. Gradually gaining Vanessa's trust, he coaxes out the dark secret of her past abuse at the hands of her stepfather. But as Vanessa senses his perverse enjoyment of her tormented past, a chilling realization dawns - Bob is the infamous 'I-5 Killer' that has been terrorizing the airwaves. Her desperate attempt to escape his clutches is thwarted when she finds the inside door handle missing from his truck. Yet, Vanessa is not a typical damsel in distress. She retaliates, shooting Bob and making her daring escape. However, against all odds, the 'Freeway Killer' survives. The tables turn when Vanessa is charged with attempted homicide, painting her as the villain while Bob basks in the unfounded glory of a victim-hero. As the media sensationalizes her story, pitting Vanessa as the societal scourge against Bob's faux-hero, the story is far from over. 'Freeway' is a darkly gripping journey through the underbelly of society, a suspenseful rollercoaster that keeps you on the edge until the last frame.
