In the heart of a tempestuous New Mexico night, college sweethearts Jim Halsey and Grace Andrews find themselves traversing the vast desert landscape. An unexpected encounter with a hitchhiker, John Ryder, turns their journey into a nightmare when he reveals his psychopathic tendencies, threatening the duo with a gleaming blade. Displaying immense courage, Jim manages to expel the danger from their car, leaving Ryder a solitary figure on the desolate highway. As dawn breaks, the couple's respite is short-lived when they spot Ryder once again, this time hitching a ride with an unsuspecting family. In a desperate bid to warn the family of the peril they unknowingly harbor, a catastrophic accident ensues. The aftermath reveals a gruesome sight: the entire family gruesomely murdered in their car, under Ryder's chilling gaze. Driven by survival, Jim heads to a nearby restaurant for help, only to be met with suspicion as the local police accuse them of the horrifying crime. The game of cat and mouse takes a dark twist when Ryder descends upon the police station, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. The couple finds themselves drawn into a relentless, bloody dance with Ryder, their lives hanging precariously in the balance as they navigate this treacherous and violent ordeal.
