Plot

In the lively whirl of 1930's high society, Vicki Wallace (Joan Blondell) finds devilish delight in pushing the buttons of her husband, Tony Wallace (Warren William). However, Tony's patience wears thin, resulting in a sharp reprisal that leaves Vicki seeking refuge in divorce. Her knight in legal armor, Vernon Thorpe (Edward Everett Horton), not only secures her freedom, but also her hand in marriage. Yet, Vicki's love for scandalous attire and her peculiar habit of inviting Tony to intimate dinners soon ignite Vernon's temper, echoing her past with another fiery encounter. In search of solace, Vicki arrives at Tony's apartment, intruding on a languid evening between him and his companion, Bonnie (Joan Wheeler). Bonnie's amusement wanes as Vicki makes herself comfortable, revealing plans of an extended stay. The tension escalates when Vernon, accompanied by George (Frank McHugh) and Anita (Claire Dodd), appears on the scene. As the night unfolds, Vicki declares her preference for Tony's fury over Vernon's, hinting at a reunion that leaves the audience on the edge of their seats. "Smarty" is a pre-production code film that captures the wild eccentricities of its time, showcasing a twisted love triangle that dances on the boundaries of societal norms. It is a captivating exploration of relationships, desire, and the sometimes bitter taste of freedom.
