Plot

In the stark and scandalous underbelly of 1930s New York, the film "Sex Madness" exposes the grim realities of an era fraught with social diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea. At the center of this unyielding battle for social reform stands philanthropist Paul Lorenz, a valiant defender against the very behaviors that fan the flames of these societal illnesses. The plot thickens within the dimly lit, smoky corridors of a burlesque show, an epicenter of casual sex and moral decay. The audience, a motley crew of individuals each harboring their unique desires, sit on the precipice of temptation. Among them are James and Jane, a young unmarried duo, Peggy, an office worker with seductive intentions for her colleague Betty, and even Lorenz's own son Tom, eagerly awaiting a post-show orgy with the starlets of the stage. Among these starlets is Sheila Wayne, a showgirl who treats her syphilis with the same casual disregard as her sexual encounters. Sharing a similar fate, yet not the same attitude, is Millicent Hamilton, a former small-town sweetheart turned reluctant showgirl. After engaging in a "casting couch" session in hopes of advancing her career, she too contracts syphilis. Guided by the well-regarded Dr. Hampton, Millicent embarks on a slow, intensive therapy, clinging to the hope of returning to her hometown and marrying her love, Wendel Hope. But as she leaves the glaring city lights behind, she is cautioned by Dr. Hampton against the lure of quick-fix quacks offering false promises of expensive miracle cures. Will Millicent stand strong and follow the slow path to recovery, or will the allure of a hasty cure and a speedy marriage to Wendel be too tempting to resist? "Sex Madness" is an unflinching exploration of the trials of young women in a society teetering on the edge of moral bankruptcy, where the pursuit of pleasure often leads to the brink of despair.
