Plot

In the vibrant yet tumultuous spring of 1866, Venice finds itself under Austrian occupation, the tension simmering beneath its historic beauty. A clandestine rebel movement is gaining momentum, their defiance echoing through the city's labyrinthine canals. Amidst this political upheaval, aristocratic Countess Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli) observes her cousin's challenge against the detestable Austrian Lieutenant Franz Mahler (Farley Granger) during a performance of Il Trovatore. The encounter ends in her cousin's arrest and subsequent exile, leaving a bitter taste in the Countess' mouth. However, fate has a twisted sense of humor. An unexpected encounter with Lieutenant Mahler transforms her initial loathing into an intense, deep-seated love. As they wander through the moonlit streets of Venice, their connection deepens, and the Countess ultimately becomes Mahler's mistress, surrendering to a passionate romance that transcends their political differences. The onset of war pulls them apart, with the Countess retreating to her country estate, her heart aching for Mahler. When he visits her one fateful night, the intoxicating blend of love and war clouds her judgment. She betrays not only her cause but also her principles, leading to a cruel twist of fate. As the Austrian occupation nears its end, the Countess is left to grapple with the tragic consequences of her choices, serving as a poignant reminder of how love can sometimes be as destructive as war.
