Sabotage (1937)

In the bustling heart of London, the Verlocs — American expatriates struggling to keep their small cinema, the Bijou, afloat — find their lives tangled in a web of intrigue and danger. Beneath Mr. Verloc's mild-mannered exterior lies a dark secret: he has become entangled in a nefarious plot with foreign terrorists intent on wreaking havoc in the city. His first task, sabotaging the city's electricity grid, fails to create the desired chaos, prompting the terrorists to escalate their plans with a far more destructive second act, involving a bomb at Piccadilly Circus. Unbeknownst to the Verlocs, the green grocer's young assistant next door, Ted, is not what he seems. He is in fact undercover Scotland Yard Sergeant Ted Spencer, assigned to keep a close eye on the Verlocs, suspecting them of involvement in the city's recent disturbances. As he uncovers more about the Verlocs, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Mrs. Verloc, convinced of her innocence in the brewing storm of terror. In the midst of this, Stevie, Mrs. Verloc's unsuspecting teenage brother who shares their home, becomes an unforeseen variable in this dangerous equation. As the lives of the Verlocs, Ted, and Stevie intersect and intertwine, they find themselves on a collision course with a plan that could change their lives — and the city of London — forever. Can they uncover the truth in time to prevent disaster, or will they be unwitting pawns in a deadly game of sabotage?
