Riders of the Whistling Pines (1949)

In the haunting shadows of the Whistling Pines, a sinister plot ensues, threatening not only the majestic timberland but the very balance of nature. Our hero, Gene, finds himself entangled in this sinister web, initially while hot on the heels of Forest Ranger Charles Carter, who is suspected of illicitly permitting lumber tycoon Henry Mitchell and his conniving associate, Bill Wright, to exploit the restricted timber. As the plot thickens, a dangerous mountain lion attack results in Gene seemingly killing Carter. Unbeknownst to him, it's actually Wright who murders Carter, fearing exposure of a deadly tussock moth infestation that could spell doom for the forest. Wright and Mitchell stand to profit massively if the infestation is left unchecked, as the dying trees would be ripe for the cutting. Stricken by guilt and seeking redemption, Gene sells his sportsman's camp, generously offering the proceeds to Carter's mourning daughter, Helen. His path of penance leads him back into the heart of the forest, where he stumbles upon the moth infestation. The Forest Department entrusts him with the responsibility of eradicating this pestilence from the air with DDT. However, the first day of spraying coincides with a mysterious mass poisoning of livestock, inciting the wrath of local stockmen. Gene, finding himself framed for these deaths, suspects the involvement of a phantom plane heard ominously flying in the night. His friend, Joe Lucas, becomes a prime suspect after a fallout with Gene. In a twist of fate, an innocent Joe stumbles upon the hidden plane at Mitchell's Mill, only to be shot by Wright. As the layers of deception unravel, a deadly showdown looms. Gene, racing against time towards a remote mountain cabin, is unaware that Mitchell awaits his arrival with murderous intent. Meanwhile, a wounded Joe takes to the skies, risking his life to warn Gene of the trap. Their fates now intertwined, they must confront the villains head-on, with the fate of the Whistling Pines hanging in the balance.
