Plot

In the turbulent autumn of 1943, Italy is plunged into a vortex of chaos, the echoes of war tearing through the heart of the nation. The landscape is marred by the uncertainty of alliances, as Marshal Badoglio, the Italian government's figurehead, secures an armistice with the Allied forces only to desert Rome, taking the king along and leaving the country in a state of turmoil. The once cohesive army is left adrift in the disarray, unable to distinguish friend from foe. This convoluted tale evolves into a tragedy, not only for the abandoned soldiers fighting to survive, but more so for the innocent civilians inhabiting Istria, Fiume, Giulia, and Dalmatia. They find themselves in the crosshairs of a fresh adversary: the relentless march of Tito's partisans, fuelled by a seething anti-Italian sentiment. Amidst this historical upheaval, the narrative spotlights Norma Cossetto, a young, vibrant student from the University of Padua, hailing from Istria. Her life takes a brutal turn as she is savagely violated and slain by Tito's partisans, her sole transgression being her Italian identity. "Red Land" is a poignant exploration of this grim epoch, casting a stark light on the human cost of war.
