In the idyllic town of Lawrenceton, Poppy Wilson, a budding entrepreneur and internet sensation, has returned home. With the backing of her affluent father, Marv Wilson, she and her best friend, Cara Embler, embark on a venture into the world of yarn and embroidery. Their charming brick-and-mortar store flourishes, but the true goldmine lies in Poppy's engaging YouTube videos. Plans for a promising book are in the works, hinting at an even brighter future. Love finds its way into Poppy's life with local reporter Dustin Sykes, who invites her to a celebratory banquet in his honor. However, when she fails to appear, the alarm bells ring. Poppy's childhood friend and local librarian, the amateur detective Aurora "Roe" Teagarden, along with Sally Allison, Dustin's colleague, find Poppy dead in her condo, a rented property of Roe's realtor mother, Aida Teagarden. Poppy's successful return has been brutally cut short, and the mystery of her demise hovers over Lawrenceton. With the town's Police Chief Lynn Smith on maternity leave, her husband Arthur Smith steps into her shoes. He leads the investigation, well aware of the Real Murders Discussion Club's keenness to delve into the mystery. This club, helmed by Roe, Sally, Mayor Sternholz, and Jason Dell, a budding P.I., is eager to unravel the truth. The investigation casts a shadow of suspicion on several people close to Poppy. The heartbroken Dustin, who had been rejected by Poppy after proposing; Sally's cousin Lizzy Allison, who suspected Poppy was having an affair with her fiancé, lawyer Bubba Rankart; Bubba himself, as mounting evidence points towards him; and Nicole Wilson, Poppy's stepmother, who might gain financially if she were Marv's sole beneficiary. With Nicole and Marv residing with Roe and Aida, the potential for danger escalates. Determined to bring justice for her friend, Roe steps into the twisted labyrinth of unsettling truths and veiled motives. She must tread carefully, for every step she takes draws her deeper into the path of the ruthless killer.
