Plot

In the quaint town of Lawrenceton, Aurora 'Ro' Teagarden, a sharp-minded librarian, reigns as the president of the Real Murders Discussion Club. Her knack for deciphering real-life murders is unparalleled among the club members. When her younger cousin, college student Phillip Pifer, and her potential love interest, Psychology professor Nick Miller, join the club, a ripple of unrest stirs, much to the dismay of Aida Teagarden, Ro's mother and local realtor, who perceives only trouble in their obsession with murder. Preparing for an upcoming meeting on the infamous Lipstick Murders, Ro finds her discussion materials either vandalized or stolen, replaced by cryptic literary quotes scrawled on her crime scene photos. The same pattern repeats at Aida's office, with the addition of a stolen item from Ro's collection, pointing to Ro as the unsettling focus of the criminal's actions. Police Chief Lynn Smith and her husband, Homicide Detective Arthur Smith - a reluctant member of the Real Murders Club - begin investigating potential suspects. The list includes Davis Mettle, a resentful new club member; Edward Irons, a disgruntled library regular; Dina McMillan, Nick's socially awkward T.A with a visible disdain for Ro; and Valerie Wagner, a family friend with unusual reactions to the crimes and privileged access to both Ro and Aida's properties. While Lynn has always been wary of the club's assistance, she reluctantly welcomes the expertise of her friend and Nick's boss, Forensic Psychologist Bree Carson, hoping to shed further light on the evidence. As the crimes escalate in violence and target those close to Ro, it becomes a race against time for this collective to unveil the criminal, whose endgame seems to be Ro herself. Will they be able to outwit this cunning adversary before it's too late?
