In the heart of Lawrenceton, Aurora Teagarden, or 'Ro' to her close-knit circle, lives a dual life as a dedicated librarian and an ardent real crime enthusiast. Her world takes a chilling turn one snowy day when an eerie spectacle unfolds in her backyard. A body hurtles from a single-engine airplane, landing mere feet from Ro and her best friend, Sally Allison, a newspaper reporter. The lifeless body belongs to none other than Frederick Burns, the Chief of Police, who Ro had interacted with just the day before regarding her boyfriend, Martin Bartell, a business executive with a cryptic ex-CIA past. Ro is torn between her desire to solve the murder and protecting Martin. At the same time, she grapples with the appearance of Tim Prentiss, Martin's ex-CIA colleague who harbors intentions towards Sally. As Ro delves deeper into the mystery, she must unravel the threads that connect Burns, Martin, and Prentiss while ensuring she doesn't become the next victim in this lethal game.
