Plot

In the quaint town of Lawrenceton, librarian and President of the Real Murders Discussion Club, Aurora "Ro" Teagarden, is unexpectedly invited to feature on a panel at "From Motive to Murder," an esteemed annual true crime convention held at a secluded mountain resort. Unbeknownst to Ro, her co-panelist is none other than Lawrenceton's Police Chief Lynn Smith, who harbors a disdain for Ro's club and their penchant for meddling in murder investigations. Accompanied by Ro's mother, realtor Aida Teagarden, and several other townsfolk who wouldn't typically attend such an event, they descend into the realm of true crime enthusiasts. The convention's traditional highlight is a murder mystery play, written and directed by the event organizer, Linda Bennett. The esteemed guest speakers, including Ro herself, are asked to take on roles in this one-off performance. The line between fiction and reality blurs when, during a strategically planned blackout, a conference attendee associated with the play is murdered on stage. With one of their own under suspicion, and the local police quick to point fingers based on circumstantial evidence alone, Ro and the Real Murders members find themselves compelled to intervene. Their investigation takes a unique twist as Police Chief Lynn Smith and her husband, Detective Arthur Smith - a fellow club member - find themselves on the outskirts of the investigation, reluctantly teaming up with Ro and her colleagues. As the plot thickens, a handful of potential suspects emerge: Linda Bennett, struggling with financial woes and a threatened theater; power-hungry developer Boyd Stauberg, eager to transform the theater into a condo development; his son Brett Stauberg, entangled in a tumultuous relationship with the victim; enigmatic librarian Andrew Wakefield, whose alibi for the murder doesn't hold up; and acclaimed author Robert Brown, the convention's keynote speaker whose fascination with true crime could conceal darker motivations. In "Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Very Foul Play," the intrigue of an innocent convention swiftly unravels into a chilling murder investigation, where everyone's a suspect and trust is a rare commodity.
