In the quaint town of Lawrenceton, Aurora "Ro" Teagarden, an unattached librarian with a passion for true crime, is an active member of the Real Murders discussion club. Her involvement irks her mother, Aida, a real estate agent who believes Ro should focus on more conventional pursuits, like finding a husband. Competitiveness thrives within the club, particularly between Ro and club president John Queensland, who are both convinced of their superior crime-solving abilities. Ro's life takes an unexpected turn when Jane Engles, a club member and elderly spinster with a particular interest in female murderers, suddenly passes away.
