Plot

"Prick Up Your Ears" unfurls the vibrant tapestry of British playwright Joe Orton's life, characterized by its dazzling spectacle and tragic conclusion. Portrayed by Gary Oldman, Orton's adolescent years see him forming an intimate bond with the more restrained Kenneth Halliwell, a role taken on by Alfred Molina. Although their relationship is not purely physical, Orton's fascination with public liaisons and bath-house encounters starkly contrasts with Halliwell's less adventurous disposition. As the pair set out on their journey to become writers, it is Orton who ascends the ladder of fame. His groundbreaking plays, "Entertaining Mr. Sloane" and "Loot", set the London stage alight during the swinging sixties. His star continues to rise as he is even entrusted with the task of writing a screenplay for the Beatles. Yet, with every step Orton takes towards success, he drifts further from Halliwell. The film also brings into focus biographer John Lahr, penning a book about Orton's life. Through his eyes, we witness the ten-year partnership between Orton and Halliwell, a relationship that straddles the line between love and creative collaboration. However, as the spotlight continues to elude him, Halliwell's response to Orton's fame culminates in a shocking act that extinguishes the life of the promising playwright. "Prick Up Your Ears" is a poignant exploration of love, ambition, and the harsh price of success, painting a riveting portrait of one of Britain's most provocative talents and the tumultuous relationship that shaped his life and work.
