Plot

In the rustic heartland of India, Peepli village, a desperate predicament befalls Natha, a debt-ridden farmer on the brink of losing his cherished land to an unpaid government loan. His only lifeline emerges in the form of a grim and paradoxical government program that provides aid to the families of indebted farmers, but only after they've committed suicide. Natha's brother, Budhia, sees this as an unconventional yet feasible solution to their financial abyss and is more than willing to nudge Natha towards this macabre 'honor'. However, Natha himself wrestles with the dilemma, uncertain of his impending choice. As the local elections loom, this personal plight unexpectedly spirals into a public spectacle. What should have been an unnoticed, tragic event in a remote village, explodes into a cause célèbre. The sleepy hamlet of Peepli soon finds itself overrun by a circus of opportunistic political heavyweights, scheming bureaucrats, local goons, and an insatiably curious media, all hungrily staking their claims in this escalating drama. Meanwhile, a careless whisper from Budhia to Natha, urging him to "do what needs to be done," falls on the ears of an unsuspecting journalist, sparking a media frenzy. The sleepy village is suddenly thrust into the relentless glare of national attention, and a single, haunting question echoes in every corner - "Will he or won't he?" As the madness heightens, Natha's fate hangs precariously in the balance, overshadowed by the public spectacle. Yet, amidst the clamor, the real concern lies in understanding how Natha truly feels, a question that seems to be forgotten in the storm of sensationalism. Peepli Live weaves a tale of desperation, humanity, and the bizarre comedy of life, where the personal and political collide in the most unexpected ways.
